When it comes to celebrities and weight loss, it’s sometimes hard to discern whether or not they’ve done it in a sustainable and healthy way, just like the stars we focus on below, or have gone for a quick fix through surgery or by injecting dangerous jabs like Ozempic, which can both leave behind excess skin and a host of health complications. Whatever quick fix a celeb chooses, it’s not the heathy route to go for those who don’t have all the money and resources that they do to deal with the sometimes horrendous side effects.
Luckily, however, there are some celebrities who go about it in the right way — through healthy eating and exercise, which is how I support my client’s on their weight loss journey when they join one of my B-Fit programmes. And so, it’s these celebrities that we’ll be focussing on here, looking at the secrets that have them feeling and appearing their best…
Rebel Wilson
One of the most famous celebrity weight loss stories since the pandemic is that of actress and comedian Rebel Wilson, widely known for her role as Fat Amy in the Pitch Perfect movies. In 2020, Rebel famously declared that it was her ‘Year of Health’, and she used the time we all had during lockdown to reach here goal weight by losing over 5st. She has maintained her healthier lifestyle since then, because she wants to be fit for her daughter, who was born by surrogate.
Rebel’s main focus is on eating protein-rich and low carb foods, which she found challenging at first, because she didn’t eat a lot of meat. According to the Mayr Method, which Rebel is rumoured to have followed, enhancing gut health and promoting mindful eating are vital components to achieving lasting weight loss. And this means there is a focus on eliminating foods that cause inflammation, like sugar and ultra-processed food and carbs, being mindful of portion sizes, and learning how to properly chew food to stimulate the enzymes that help to facilitate good digestion.
She says that she also eats her main meal at breakfast, which gives her digestive system time to process what she eats, and she doesn’t deny herself life’s pleasures either. In fact, scrolling through her Instagram feed, you can clearly see that Rebel enjoys a bit of cake (don’t we all?). Back in October 2020, she posted: “Remember though girls, you still gotta treat yourself. (I just do it with food now only once or twice a week…and substitute bubble baths on alternate nights).” She also told People magazine in the US: “Some weeks are just write-offs, and there’s nothing you can do about that. I’m just trying to go for overall balance.”
Rebel has also recently admitted to gaining back a bit of the weight that she lost after the birth of her daughter, Royce, last year. She is quoted as saying: ’I did gain weight once I had my baby, because although I didn’t give birth to her and I didn’t need to lose any baby weight, I had just gained weight from the lack of sleep and from the change in my lifestyle… For instance, now I can’t go to the gym as often as I used to. I’m just not working out as much so that has slowed me down.”
The actress and comedian trained with celeb PT Gunnar Peterson of F45 Training during her Year of Health. Peterson, who also works with J-Lo and Kim Kardashian, created the F45 Training program, which focuses on high intensity group coaching. And even though Rebel finds it difficult to get to the gym now that she’s mum to a little one, she still incorporates moderate walking into her schedule every day to keep her body moving.
Mindy Kaling
Mindy Kaling, who starred in the US version of Ricky Gervais’s classic BBC comedy The Office, has also had a dramatic transformation over the past couple of years. She says her dramatic weight loss is the result of being mindful of portion sizes and doing plenty of exercise. She was quoted in People Magazine as saying, “I just tell myself I have to do basically 20 miles a week of either hiking or running. And so that’s been incredibly helpful to me.”
Adele
Just before the pandemic, Adele shocked all of us when she posted a photo of herself at Drake’s birthday party on Instagram and many people didn’t recognise her. In late 2020 when she presented popular US TV show Saturday Night Live, she said: “I know I look really, really different since you last saw me, but actually, because of all the Covid restrictions, I had to travel light and I could only bring half of me — and this is the half I chose.”
She credits her amazing transformation to working out with weights, hiking and boxing. And she began living a healthier lifestyle not because she wanted to reach an ideal weight, but because of the anxiety that was crippling her after her previous marriage broke up. Adele told British Vogue that “working out, I would just feel better”. She also said, ”it was never about losing weight. It was always about becoming strong and giving myself as much time every day without my phone. I was addicted to it.”
Celeb Weight Loss Tips Summary
So, as you can see, it is very possible to lose weight naturally so that you look and feel good in your clothes, tone up your flabby bits and learn to eat in a healthier way that will give your body the nutrition it needs to function properly — and give you all the energy you need to get through the day without reaching for a quick fix of sugar or coffee.
In summary, here are those celeb weight loss tips again:
Cut down on sugar and ultra-processed foods — detoxing your fat cells means giving your body good nutrition, so cutting down or even eliminating these inflammation forming foods will help your body to release excess weight faster. If you need support in kickstarting a detox and cutting down these foods, why not try Nature’s Sunshine’s Healthy Starter Program? There’s no need to fast while taking these cellular cleansing supplements of Pre + Pro 15 probiotics and Liquid Chlorophyll, which work to support your digestive system in eliminating the toxins that are released. If you avoid alcohol, caffeine, wheat and red meat while on the Healthy Starter Program, you’ll get even better results.
Increase protein and good fats — organic, locally sourced and grass-fed meats are great for helping your body get the amino acids it needs to build muscle. Plus, adding good fats to your meals, like organic or raw butter, extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil and avocados, will help you to feel fuller faster and make you feel more energetic.
Be aware of your portion sizes — It’s said that you can never have too much of a good thing, but this is not true. Clean whole foods are good for you and will not only feed your cells with the nutrition they need, but will also fill you up faster than a frozen pizza! Start by eating the greens and proteins before you touch the carbs and you’ll soon find you won’t be piling too much on your plate to begin with.
Chew each mouthful with mindfulness — another amazing feature from Mother Nature is that whole foods require chewing — you can’t shove a salad down your throat as fast as a cake and for good reason. Whole foods need you to chew in order to activate the enzymes in your saliva that get your stomach and intestines working as they should. And the more aware you become with each mouthful — taking note of the texture and taste of each morsel — the happier your your digestive system will be moving forward.
Move your body — When you’re fuelling your body with what it needs, you’ll have enough energy to complete a daily exercise routine, whether that be strength training with weights, walking, pilates, yoga, a Zumba class or dance around your room to your favourite beats, or even a tennis lesson. — as long as you do something every day.
Get professional help — One of the common themes amongst all of the above celeb transformations — and for anyone who transforms their body in a healthy and sustainable way — is that they ALL have professional 1-2-1 help and support from highly experienced Personal Trainers and Nutrition coaches on a consistent and regular basis. Professional coaches will keep you accountable when it comes to your fitness goals and have a deep understanding of any challenges you’ll face and guide you on how to overcome them with ease.
