If you haven’t noticed, bone broth is very ‘in’ these days in the health and nutrition world. There are many healing and aesthetic benefits to this soothing tonic such as improving your digestion and gut health, boosting your immune system, and stimulating collagen to improve skin hair, and nails. It’s highly nutritious with easily assimilated / bioavailable nutrients which are so important during the cold and flu season. Let’s get started with this mini guide on bone broth.
WHAT IS BONE BROTH?
Bone broth is the result of cooking bones (ideally from organic grass-fed animals) for a long period of time in water until they have broken down enough for the nutrients to be released. These nutrients include the well-known amino acids collagen and gelatine, as well as many key vitamins and minerals.
HOW TO USE BONE BROTH?
I love to sip on bone broth just like a toasty cup of tea. You can also use it to cook with e.g cook your veggies in it, use it as a base in soups, stews, and sauces for all those extra flavours and nutrients. You can add dumplings, noodles, leftover protein, and greens for a quick, delicious mid-week meal.
WHERE TO GET BONE BROTH?
You could make your own (see my HOMEMADE BONE BROTH RECIPE HERE) but equally I totally understand how busy we all are so some ready-made alternatives I recommend are Daylesford’s. They are a little pricey but delicious, organic, and healthy!!!

HOW TO STORE BONE BROTH?
You can store bone broth in an airtight container in the fridge for 5-7days, or freeze it for later use.
BENEFITS OF BONE BROTH
Bone broth offers cleansing, soothing, and healing benefits for your entire body. It even can heal inflammation in your gut and decrease joint pain.
The slow-cooked nature of bone broths makes them easy to digest and perfect for an under-performing digestive system. They are beautifully healing to the gut as they reduce the permeability and provide a natural seal to the gut lining, which works to reduce inflammation while still allowing other vital nutrients to be digested.
Bone broth is an important source of amino acids that are essential for the production of collagen which in turn is responsible for strong and healthy hair, skin and nails, and supports muscle and joint integrity and recovery. The amino acid glycine is also required for immune function, fat metabolism, and calms the central nervous system; while proline is essential for promoting cardiovascular health. Chicken broth also contains the amino acid cysteine, which thins excess mucus off your lungs, making it less sticky and congestive, and easier to pass.
All in all, bone broth is a pretty amazing elixir and something I would recommend you try out.
